Crime - Georgia Tech Student Fatally Shot in Midtown: Suspect Surrenders to Authorities
In a tragic turn of events, a promising Georgia Tech student, 21-year-old Akash Banerjee, lost his life following a shooting outside an apartment complex in Midtown Atlanta. The incident, which occurred on May 18, has shocked the Georgia Tech community and raised concerns about safety in student housing areas.
The suspected shooter, Nigel Belser, 21, turned himself in at the Fulton County Jail after a warrant was issued for his arrest. He faces serious charges, including murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
Authorities say the shooting took place at The Connector Apartments on Spring Street. Preliminary investigations suggest an argument between Banerjee and Belser escalated into violence.
Banerjee was shot in the head and succumbed to his injuries a few days later, despite medical efforts to save his life.
Investigators believe the act was targeted and that the two individuals knew each other prior to the incident. However, the nature of their relationship has not been publicly disclosed. Police continue to gather evidence and interview witnesses to piece together what led to the fatal encounter.
The Atlanta Police Department is urging anyone with information related to the case to contact Crime Stoppers at 404-577-8477. Anonymous tips may be eligible for a reward.
This heartbreaking case serves as a reminder of the ongoing need for conflict resolution resources and mental health support, particularly among young adults in high-stress environments like college campuses.
