The independent hip-hop scene continues to produce artists with unique perspectives, and John S.I.N. Different is one of those voices. We had the opportunity to sit down with him to discuss his musical journey, lyrical influences, and where he believes rap is headed over the next decade.

"I've Been Rapping Since Elementary School"

When asked how long he has been making music, John S.I.N. Different didn't hesitate.

"I've been rapping since I was in elementary school."

Years of writing and performing have helped shape an artist who refuses to sound like everyone else.

Building a Style That's Different

One thing that stands out about John S.I.N. Different is his unique lyrical approach. While many artists from Pittsburg, California drew inspiration from local legends like The Figaz, he chose to develop his own identity.

According to John, the key was becoming a true student of music.

"Just being a student of the game all around—not only listening to one particular style of music—is the best way I can put it. I'm from West Pittsburg, but my mom is from Monroe, Louisiana, and my dad is from Dallas, Texas. So I got the South and the West influence, and I used to listen to a lot of East Coast music as well. I'm just a mixture of everything."

That blend of regional influences has helped him create a sound that isn't confined to one coast or one trend.

The Future of Hip-Hop

When asked where he sees rap and hip-hop in the next five to ten years, John believes the culture is approaching a turning point.

"In my opinion, rap and hip-hop have hit a climax where the reset button needs to be hit so it can regroup off the grid. The industry has watered down the essence to the point where people have forgotten that the artists, as well as the consumers, hold the power—not these platforms."

He also believes today's business model has changed the creative process.

"Streaming and pay-to-play promotion are not only robbing artists of proper financial benefits, but also the spirit of original, organic talent. Nobody wants to be different because labels and media only promote one sound and one agenda—death culture and viral microwave hits. As a result, many of the most talented people either get drowned out or lose the motivation to keep creating."

Independent Artists Have an Opportunity

Although mainstream hip-hop continues to dominate playlists, John believes independent artists still have an opportunity to build loyal audiences by staying authentic and creating music that reflects who they truly are rather than chasing trends.
