A routine Fourth of July flight into Chicago turned into an unusual aviation incident after a firework reportedly struck a Delta Air Lines aircraft during its final approach to the airport.
According to Delta Air Lines and federal officials, Flight 1076 was descending into Chicago Midway International Airport after departing from Atlanta when the crew heard what the pilot described as a "big bang." The pilot immediately notified air traffic control that the aircraft had apparently made contact with a firework while continuing its approach.
Despite the alarming incident, the Airbus A319 landed safely with all 52 passengers and six crew members on board. No injuries were reported, and Delta removed the aircraft from service so mechanics could inspect it.
