From a Grandparents’ Living Room to Serving an Entire Community

Some nonprofits begin with large grants, corporate sponsors, and extensive resources.

Branches of Community Services began with something much more powerful: a desire to help.

More than 15 years ago, the organization’s founders started serving families directly from their home.

With no major sponsors and operating largely on a fixed retirement income, they saw needs in the community and decided to take action. What started as a small act of service grew into a mission that would impact countless children and families throughout Pittsburg and beyond.

Like many successful nonprofits, the journey wasn’t easy. Every backpack distributed, every school supply donated, every community event organized, and every family served required countless hours of volunteer work, fundraising, planning, and sacrifice. While many people see the finished event, few see the dedication that happens behind the scenes.

Yet year after year, Branches of Community Services continued to grow.

Thanks to the commitment of volunteers, community partners, donors, and local supporters, the organization evolved from a small family-led effort into a respected nonprofit dedicated to improving the lives of local families. Their work is built on a simple belief: when children have the tools they need to succeed, entire communities become stronger.

Today, that mission continues through educational support programs, community outreach efforts, and one of Pittsburg’s most anticipated annual events—the Back-2-School Backpack & School Supply Giveaway.

Now celebrating its 18th year, the giveaway has become more than just a distribution event. It is a symbol of what can happen when a community comes together to support its children.

Families receive much-needed school supplies, children receive encouragement and confidence as they prepare for a new school year, and neighbors come together to celebrate the spirit of giving.

This year’s event will feature free backpacks, free school supplies, free books, family-friendly activities, and a petting zoo sponsored by Chick-fil-A Pittsburg.
