Left Alone in a Car: Infant Found Crying While Mother Attended CNA Orientation

Child Left Alone

In a deeply concerning incident on April 15th, 2025, police responded to an emergency call at a nursing facility after staff discovered a baby crying and unattended in a parked vehicle. The infant, believed to be around 8 months old, was found in distress with no adult present. The child was not properly secured in the car seat, and the base of the seat was unanchored—a combination that could have led to a tragic outcome.

The child’s mother, who was inside the facility for a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) orientation, initially told officers that her sister was supposed to be in the car watching the child. However, staff members disputed that claim, stating no other adult had been seen in the car. Body camera footage captured the mother trying to explain the situation, admitting that she had stepped inside for orientation and that her sister had “disappeared.”

Further investigation revealed the baby may have been left in the vehicle for up to four hours. Officers reported a noticeable odor of marijuana inside the car, though the mother denied any use or possession. When officers attempted to call the number she had been dialing—allegedly belonging to her sister—they reached a voicemail that appeared to belong to a child.

The baby was taken inside the nursing facility by staff members before being transferred to a local hospital for medical evaluation. Paramedics noted the child was warm to the touch, raising concerns about prolonged exposure to heat and inadequate care.

Police ultimately arrested the mother and charged her with endangering the life and health of a child. She was processed and released with a notice to appear in court. The child was placed in protective custody, and child welfare services were notified. The case remains open and is scheduled to be reviewed in court in August.

Key Takeaways:

  • The child was unsecured and alone in a vehicle for an unknown amount of time.

  • The mother falsely claimed another adult was present.

  • The infant showed signs of distress but is expected to recover after medical evaluation.

  • Authorities are continuing the investigation, and charges have been filed.

This incident is a stark reminder of the dangers of leaving children unattended in vehicles, even briefly. With rising temperatures and increasing concerns over child neglect, it highlights the importance of accountability, awareness, and immediate intervention when a child’s safety is at risk.
