Oakland Recall Leader to Speak at CoCoTax June Luncheon in Concord
Oakland Recall Leader
The Contra Costa Taxpayers Association (CoCoTax) is set to host its June luncheon with a timely and provocative guest speaker—Seneca Scott, a labor leader and community organizer widely recognized for spearheading the recent successful recall of Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao.
The luncheon will be held on Friday, June 27, 2025, from 11:45 a.m. to 1:10 p.m. at Denny’s, 1313 Willow Pass Road in Concord, CA.
The event promises to spark insightful discussions on the current challenges and political dynamics facing Oakland—and how those issues may ripple into surrounding areas, including Contra Costa County.
Who Is Seneca Scott?
Seneca Scott brings a diverse background in labor organizing, grassroots activism, and civic engagement. Formerly the East Bay Director for SEIU Local 1021, Scott has also co-founded several community-driven initiatives such as Bottoms Up Community Gardens and Oakhella, a cultural platform rooted in Oakland’s Black and Brown communities.
In 2020, Scott ran for Oakland City Council, and in the years since, he has continued his political engagement by launching "Neighbors Together," a community improvement initiative, and Gotham Oakland, a YouTube channel spotlighting dysfunction and corruption in local government.
Scott’s direct and outspoken critique of city leadership culminated in a successful campaign to recall Mayor Sheng Thao, a political shake-up that continues to reverberate throughout the Bay Area.
What to Expect at the Luncheon
At the CoCoTax luncheon, Scott will speak candidly about the deep-rooted issues plaguing Oakland: rising crime, worsening homelessness, financial instability, and what he describes as a breakdown of public trust in city governance. His remarks are expected to address how these issues are not confined to Oakland alone and may serve as cautionary lessons for Contra Costa and other neighboring counties.
The event offers an opportunity for residents, taxpayers, and policymakers to hear firsthand from someone at the forefront of a major political movement.
