San Francisco Mayor Sends 127 Layoff Notices to City Workers

San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie has sent layoff notices to 127 city employees across 18 departments as part of a broader effort to eliminate 500 positions in city government.

According to NBC Bay Area, the layoffs are tied to the city’s worsening budget outlook and a wider push to cut costs before the financial situation gets even worse.

Lurie said the move is meant to address a budget deficit that could rise to $1 billion, while San Francisco also faces major cuts in federal and state funding.

He described the layoffs as painful but necessary, arguing that taking action now could prevent even deeper cuts in the future.

The report says the notices mark an early and highly visible step in what could become a much larger restructuring of city government.

With 500 positions targeted overall, the layoffs reflect the pressure San Francisco leaders are under as they try to stabilize city finances while maintaining public services and supporting the city’s economic recovery.
