Google Maps Could Soon Let Gemini Order Your Food

Google Maps may soon become much more than a navigation app. According to recent reports, Google is testing a new Gemini-powered feature that could allow users to search for restaurants and place food orders directly inside Google Maps.
The feature appears to build on Google's existing "Ask Maps" AI experience, which already helps users discover restaurants, attractions, and local businesses through natural conversations. Hidden code found in a recent Android version of Google Maps suggests users may soon be able to simply tell Gemini what they're craving, and the AI could handle the ordering process for them.
The leaked code includes prompts such as:
- "Ask Maps to order food"
- "Say what you're craving"
- "Maps will order for you—even while you're on the go."
If launched, the feature could streamline the entire process of finding a restaurant, selecting a meal, and placing an order without switching between multiple apps. While it's still unclear whether Google will partner with services like DoorDash or Uber Eats—or offer its own ordering system—the goal appears to be making food ordering faster and more convenient.
Google has not officially announced a release date, and the feature is still under development. As with many features discovered through app code, there's no guarantee it will be released publicly. However, it aligns with Google's broader strategy of expanding Gemini's AI capabilities across its products and services.
If this feature launches, Google Maps could evolve into a one-stop destination for discovering restaurants, navigating to them, making reservations, and even ordering meals—all powered by conversational AI.
