Oakland School Board Reverses After-School Cuts After Community Pushback

The Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) Board has voted to restore funding for after-school programs, reversing a prior decision that would have significantly impacted students and families across the district.
The controversy began when the board initially passed a resolution to reduce spending by capping expenditures on consultants, outside contracts, and administrative salaries.
Though the move was intended to protect essential school-based services, its application to the upcoming fiscal budget unexpectedly resulted in cuts to after-school program funding. The decision sparked immediate concern, especially among parents and community advocates who feared the consequences for working families and vulnerable students.
In response to widespread backlash, the board convened a special meeting on May 22, 2025. After hearing from the public and reevaluating the impact of the cuts, members voted to repeal the resolution, effectively restoring the funding. Board President Jennifer Brouhard and Vice President Valarie Bachelor emphasized that the original intent had always been to preserve critical student services, including after-school support.
The board’s reversal was seen as a victory for community engagement and a reminder of the vital role after-school programs play in student development, academic support, and family stability. These programs are especially crucial for low-income families that rely on them for childcare and enrichment.
As the board works toward finalizing the 2025–2026 budget, upcoming meetings on June 4 and June 11 will focus on the district’s third interim financial update and the proposed spending plan. Final budget approval is scheduled for June 30.
